Artscript v2.0, aiming for quality.

atk-v2_all_1So you finished your latest work, and you want to quickly adapt your work for sharing. Open up GImp (Inkscape, Krita), resize, add watermark, save. Repeat for the number of formats and sizes you need. Shell scriptitng is an option, as long as you know what you are doing. Gui frontends are available like Converseen and Phatch, the first a bit simplistyc and the later far more complex.

Then, there is Artscript, tailored to get high quality results for digital painters, supporting transforms from XCF, ORA, KRA and SVG using the applications you already have. GIMP, Inkscape and Krita. The advantage is that all operations are optimized for preserving your hard work intact over the downscale operation. An example of this, artscript will not degrade color quality if a low jpeg quality is selected.

My linux applications for production [en/es]

[ When you go to a course in Mexico about painting or web design there is no place where the first one does not contain Photoshop and the second does not dedicate half course to Dreamwaver. This generate the false illusion that without this two tools its impossible to paint or make websites ]

[ My intention with this blog post is to help to break this illusion showing all the tools I use to generate my work. It’s not a tutorial but a detailed list on the applications I use and why. ]

My Inkscape story +lots of illustrations.

When I was starting digital color, I always thought vectors were for simple and uninteresting stuff. The truth is I was not comfortable using them. Back then I tried only Illustrator, which to this date I can’t find a comfortable way of using it. After my first short migration to linux I met with Inkscape and I made some experiments with it and some more complex work.

cmus-notify: simple bash script for cmus to print current song info w/ libnotify

I’ll deviate a bit from the usual sketch and arts posts to share a little script in bash I’ve been using to enhance my user experience with cmus

what is cmus? (wiki)

Cmus is a console music player. I chose this one over a GUI option because all I want from a music player is to hear my songs. Because the need was so simple I decided to get something less resource hungry than my previous option (audacious). I tried exaile and other 2 options I no can no longer remember. In the end cmus worked as expected using almost no resources in this aging PC.

Cmus does a lot more stuff than just laying songs, and because of that there is little I miss about my previous player. There was only one thing I missed: The use of the mouse scroll wheel over the task bar icon to change songs.

Screenshot Artscript on Mac, this is how it looks.

Artscript on OSX runs, but I think the Imagemagick installation is incomplete because it moans about fonts. As it is not my Mac I was only able to test for a few minutes. Convert works, but not montage if I call it from the terminal. I can call the script from finder using the setting of the screenshot, but like this, even if Artscript shows the files as “loaded”, it won’t convert them and will throw errors to me. A bit frustrating.

Integrating Artscript with geeqie

Finally! Artscript Collage Range mode

I’ve been working hard lately on polishing the Collage range mode. To make it useful it needed the ability to change colors of background, label and border. I tried to avoid duplication making everything into processes or loops. I added a lot more of custom properties to customize. Specially of use are the color swatches which if configured properly can provide a quick theme for collage outputs.

[ About the same time the Color to Alpha was added to krita master branch, another tool made it with less sound and whistle, the Image Offset tool]

[At first I was unsure on how to use it to make something. According to his main supporter, this tool will aid you on making seamless tiled textures. Some ideas came out of this like “It’s far easier to use gimp for making textures out of photos”, but I found a better use. It’s a great aid to make mosaic tiles, wallpapers (tapestry) or patters in general. I’ll show you how I made the ones that accompany this blog post.]

Artscript v1.0 released

net_atk-2text
Finally I made sometime to develop artscript. This time I focused on fixing bug and finish enhancements on some of the features. Inkscape and calligraconveter are optional dependencies now, so you won’t need either of those to use artscript to transform most files. Collage tile size was adjusted to allow rectangular sizes, this is particularly useful to build photo contact sheets or storyboards, before all tiles had a 1:1 aspect ratio which produced an awkward spacing between equally sized elements.
